One word comes to mind when I think of Brinkley Davies, passion; Passion for creative pursuits, the ocean, and helping the world around us. At a young age, she’s taken risks to follow her dreams, so that she can do what she loves every day. She’s open, honest and giving beautiful insight into her life as a surfing, modeling marine biologist.
Meet Brinkley…
Where are you in the world?
I am on the coast in South Australia at home at the moment finishing off my marine biology degree.
How do you follow your bliss all year round?
By spending time doing the things I love, surfing, freediving, participating in ocean conservation, marine biology, yoga, and being around happy open-minded people.
If fear ever shows up in your life, how do you move passed it?
Accept what I am fearing, and approach it head on. Fear is often a mask to being nervous about a huge opportunity, or changes. I always ask myself, ” What is the worst that can happen? ” You can always go back to where you are, so why not constantly move forward and progress in life?
Why do you love what you do?
I love what I do because every day it is different. Every time when I go for a surf, it is different, every time I enter the ocean I have a different experience, and it challenges me to know more and do more.
My university degree has been far from easy, and every time I feel stressed out or overwhelmed, I just remember that at the end of it I’ll have a whole world of knowledge I didn’t have before, that I can use to build a dream career and help save our oceans.
What’s one of the biggest risks you’ve taken, and how did it feel to go for it?
I think not working a part time job anymore, because I now spend all my time working on personal projects for my career. Not having a constant income is a big risk, but also gives me the time to work on things I am passionate about, so that I can one day make it my career.
Tell us a time when something totally synchronistic happened…
In July this year I was in a really low place and decided to apply to go up to Ningaloo Reef and do some work experience on the whale shark boats.
This blew me away, and put into proportion how small and insignificant my problems were. I came to appreciate the incredible people you meet when you travel, the places I saw, the experiences I had, and realised that in this life it is totally up to us to create happiness for ourselves. So from there on in I decided to go with my soul and never give up on dreams ever again.
What advice could you give to someone who knows what they love to do, but haven’t gone for it?
Decide what you want, and just go for it. There will be risks, there will be consequences, but in the end you have decided what’s going to make you happy in the long run.
